I saw my first butterfly of 2012 today -- pretty sure it was a dark phase female tiger swallowtail. It is so warm today I have the window open.
Last week some goldfinches came through the yard and fed on tobacco weed seeds. The first day I just saw one, but the next day -- after our first snowfall of any consequence -- I saw at least eight of them. I got some photos through the window...not very clear, but you can tell they are American goldfinches:
Daffodils and quince bushes are still blooming. And I think I can announce that the forsythia I observe for Nature's Notebook has enlarging buds, and some appear to have elongated and broken through a little. Here's a photo from today:
